“Morocco has established itself as a leading golf destination in recent years, and the newly- opened Michlifen Resort and Golf Club has immediately thrust itself into the running to be the best course in the country. The layout was designed by Jack Nicklaus and, upon its official opening last October, was given the royal seal of approval by the golf- mad HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, who also doubles as President of the Moroccan Royal Golf Federation. And it’s very easy to see why.

From the moment you step onto the property, it’s clear that Michlifen is unlike anything you will experience anywhere else – in Morocco or any other country. Think of Morocco and you imagine scorched desert terrain and traditional North African souks and squares with narrow streets between dusty brown walls. You’re most likely thinking of Marrakech rather than Michlifen.

Here, mountainous landscapes and lush green trees are more typical, alongside cooler temperatures more agreeable for playing golf. Confounding your expectations, the hotel itself has the look and feel of an Alpine chalet – a nod to the period of French influence (Michlifen means ‘snow flake’) and control that began in the 19th century and officially ended with Moroccan independence in 1956.

As impressive as the architecture is, the real star is the course that Jack built. “The site for Michlifen is one of the most scenic, beautiful vistas you will find for a golf experience,” said the 18-time major winner. “I do not single out holes, and I certainly don’t believe in a signature hole when I have been given the mandate to create 18 equally spectacular holes. But when assessing these breathtaking views at Michlifen, they are truly taken into full breadth at holes 9, 17 and 18.”

It’s hard to disagree with the great man because that trio of holes do indeed offer some of the most incredible views you will ever experience, it’s the quality, subtlety and variety of all 18 holes that really elevates Michlifen. Too many courses quickly fade from the memory, a blur of holes and tests that too easily merge into one another. But every hole at Michlifen remains lodged in the memory bank thanks to the quality and variety of the design. It forces you to think and make decisions and gives you the chance to hit great shots without being overly punitive when the inevitable bad one creeps in – often the result of mountainous backdrops making depth of perception tricky. Select your club wisely as the ball flies further at altitude – good for your ego, not so much your scorecard. All 18 holes live long in the memory, but Jack perhaps saved the very best until last. One of the greatest finishing holes you may ever play, the fairway is bordered by a cliff along its left and tall, dense trees along the right. The second shot is semi- blind from an uphill lie, to a green that runs off in every direction. It’s a beautiful yet dangerous finish – a worthy exclamation mark on a wonderful layout.

When the round is over, the resort allows you to reflect on your triumphs in the lap of luxury – five-star suites, spa and a choice of three world-class restaurants make it easy to extend your stay for as long as time and your budget allows.”
